Kinky

I found the book Kinky to be really interesting. At first I thought how do you make a whole book of poems about Barbie dolls but after reading the book I tried to see what the author was trying to do by using Barbies as a subject of her poems. I think that the author used Barbie as a representation of women or the idea of a perfect woman. Barbie is the perfect representation of how women have been idealized by society because as the author discussed through her poems, she never ages, her body is perfect, she is never in a bad mood and she can be whatever you want her to be. You really have to use your imagination to see the meaning behind some of the poems and some of them are a tad bit odd but I think the author is helping her readers see that like Barbie, there is more to women which meets the eye.

Some of the poems that I liked/ found interesting were:
Blindfolded Barbie
Kinky
Black Barbie History
Beatnik Barbie

  1. It is interesting to think you could have an entire book of poems just about Barbies but reading them, they all seem to work. It kind of made me think of other things you could say about Barbie like maybe some of her careers. I think the author could write so many more poems especially now since Barbie has been reinvented, dumped Ken, and got pregnant.

  2. I agree I felt the author played on this notion of women trying to achieve perfection. I feel like your summation was on point. There is more than what lies on the surface. But I felt as though this was a really good reader, to get your mind flowing on certain subjects.

  3. I agree women do idealize barbie and strive to reach the perfection we believe Barbie ensues in her presence and character. I do believe the author was trying to illustrate the point that beauty is not only skin deep. I also enjoyed the poems kinky and Black Barbie History. Some where a little odd, so I was slow to caught its meaning in its entirety but I did enjoy this book.
